Corporate Dashboards

Corporate dashboards have become increasingly popular over the past five years as business intelligence software platforms have become more prevalent. The corporate dashboard provides organizations with the ability track key metrics against company strategy in order to gauge the company's ability to perform according to pre-determined targets. Corporate dashboard examples include balanced scorecard dashboards that are often used to measure performance against strategic direction. Corporate dashboards until recently have been the domain of enterprise organizations using complex and costly business intelligence platforms like cognos and other reporting engines like business objects. In recent years, however, corporate dashboards have become more affordable across a broad spectrum of company types.

Getting Started with Corporate Dashboards

Before a company gets started with corporate dashboards, there are a number of issues that must be addressed. The first is to understand who the users will be of the corporate dashboards that will be implemented. In order for corporate dashboards to be useful the company must examine who will need to access the data as well as the data that will be required by the corporate dashboards. The underlying metrics that will be tracked int he corporate dashboards are the most fundamental part of the planning stage since measuring incorrect metrics will ultimately lead to useless corporate dashboards.

Software for Corporate Dashboards

In order to create corporate dashboards the organization is going to have to invest in a platform designed to publish corporate dashboards. While these software platforms can be had from a number of organizations it's important for the buying company to have a clear understanding of their requirements and the their budgets since corporate dashboards software can range greatly in price and capabilities. Enterprise organizations, or companies with rich IT resources and budgets, may benefit from corporate dashboards platforms from the likes of Cognos or business objects. SMB companies with little if any IT may need to revert from corporate dashboards to simpler reporting software. Whatever the choice to power your corporate dashboards it's critical to understand that the process will require a significant amount of time.

Planning Corporate Dashboards

Once a corporate dashboards platform has been selected, the next step is to create a plan of implementation. One of the first challenges of any corporate dashboards deployment will be understanding where the data lives that will be used in the corporate dashboards. Some business intelligence platforms like EMANIO Context! will have built-in data warehousing features to make the process easier and faster, while other platforms will require this step to be planned and executed separately. At all stages of the planning process of corporate dashboards it's critical to understand what is required and what will be needed in the next phase.

Implementing Corporate Dashboards

Implementing or deploying the corporate dashboards is also going to be a process that might be fraught with problems if not handled properly. One of the best ways to avoid these "teething" problems is to start small. It's often more practical to deploy a corporate dashboards for a small sub-set of individuals in order to understand the problems that will arise and in order to make changes to the implementation process before the corporate dashboards are deployed company-wide.
